Hi Guys and Girls,
I've had a Sony Vaio PCG K315s since late Nov 04 and it's been fine until a week ago. My girlfriend had a CD from work which conatined Teachers resources which she needed to look at and print off. She put the CD in the DVD drive and you could hear the disk spinning up and the cursor with the cd next to it came on and off for a minute or two. The disk didn't autorun so i went to My Computer, right clicked on the dvd drive and clicked Explore. I was then told that there was no disk in the drive. Ever since then the drive will not recognise music cds, software cds game cd's etc. It won't burn a cd either (tell's me to insert a blank disc althought one is already in). However, if you put a movie dvd in the drive it autoruns and plays fine. I can also burn a dvd using the drive. Can anyone help? Is this a firmware issue?
Cheers
Will
Sounds like the drive has gone duff. Most drives use one lens for DVDs and another lens for CDs so if one works and the other doesn't that would suggest a problem with the CD lens. If cleaning the lens properly (they are both in the same place) doesn't work then it may be a trip to the Sony repair centre.
Thanks TygerTyger,
I've called Sony Support and the guy got me to do allsorts of things but nothing worked. He said if a restore didn't fix it then it'll need to go to the repair centre. Just thought i'd see if anyone else has had the problem,
Cheers,
Will
Write a note specifying the problem and stick it in with the laptop when it's sent off as well.
WOW this is becoming all too common now, must be like the 20th person who's returned their laptop for this issue
Just very glad it's still in warranty and hopefully won't take too long to fix. I wonder why so many are having this problem. I work at a company which sells PC's and laptops and i've never heard of a dvd drive that reads and burns dvd's but can't read or burn a cd? Anyway, just got to wait for the courier now!
Thanks all,
Will
If memory serves this problem has been almost entirely with Matshita drives. But I'm not sure.....
I'm surprised you have never heard of the problem, I've seen it quite a bit on the forum.
Think you're right TT
