Xperia E lockscreen shows unread SMS that are not there

Hi all!

Whenever i reveive a new sms, there is a message on the lockscreen showing 3 (!) unread text messages.

When i drag that message icon to the right, the one new message is displayed. There is only one new message, not three. When i read the message, the notification dissapears from the lockscreen. The notification counts also two unread messages that are not there. This is also visible with the blue light blinking all night.

I have already

- deleted all text messages from the phone

- installed the latest firmware upgrade

- tried to locate a BadgeProvider app that someone else was able with to delete the small notification next to the SMS icon. couldn't find it on the xperia E, but is not the same problem anyway...

- reset the phone (settings reset)

Is there anything short of a complete factory reset that will make these two nonexisting messages dissappear from limbo?

It is actually my daughters phone which she borrowed me while my own one is in Sonys care due to sudden death, so I'd rather not delete her candy crush and angry birds stats, e.g. try to keep a healthy relationship....

So you have already performed a factory settings reset? Can you check if the same occurs in safe mode?

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.

Unfortunately, if you have tried the things that you mention but the same thing occur it sounds like you need to perform a factory reset via Settings or a software repair via PC Companion:

http://support.sonymobile.com/global-en/tools/pc-companion/

In PC Companion you press start on Support Zone > Start on Update the phone/tablet software > Repair phone/tablet (the blue clickable link in the message) > Follow these steps without having your device connected to the PC.

Follow the instruction that appears in the program and do not connect your device until this guide tells you how to connect it.

Thanks for the suggestion! I tried it, and later also the same for com.android.smspush but the error is still there.

I guess I have to live with bad karma for a few months when Candy Crush and Angry Birds are gone after the full reset/repair...

You may need to perform a software repair using PC Companion. The process will erase all internal memory. You might need to charge your device for about 1-2 hours before so the device has at least 60% battery.

Make sure the device is not connected to computer or laptop and turned off (sometimes you have to press power button and volume up until the device vibrates 3 times or on some devices you have to press the small button near the SIM tray or on the back of the device).

Open PC companion->support zone->phone/tablet software update->repair my phone/tablet blue highlighted.Follow the steps given,do not connect your phone until prompted to press volume down while plugging USB cable. If PC companion does not start the repair process, you might need to run it in compatibility mode with Windows 7 (in some cases XP).

Actually I had the same problems (unread SMS/MMS) and deletion of all SMS/MMS (first backup) didn't help. The unread SMS/MMS didn't disappear on lockscreen and message count beside the default SMS/MMS Icon.

> The solution i found was Google Hangouts - I choosed Hangouts as default for SMS/MMS. Hangouts reads the SMS/MMS communication trail and while I was scrolling througt the list I found the real unread SMS: "failed to retreive the message" (from unkonwn sender - i suppose my provider)

After opening this SMS/MMS with Hangouts, the message count of the default SMS/MMS Icon was ok.
