SMS App Exremely slow and basically unusable

Is anyone else having issues ? Seems to be alright, still sometimes slow though, while using Hello SMS but the 'Messaging' inbuilt app is totally broken, takes a minute almost to open, then scrolling is extremely slow, opening messages takes ~30secs, MMS messages, pictures for eg, sometimes won't download or if they do will flash on the screen - image, then image placeholder no image, then back to image again - this happens constantly back and forth, or there just won't be a picture there.

Build number: 9.2.A.2.5

Messaging Version: 9.2.A.0.11

There are no updates available within the update manager for this app showing on my device.

After upgrade to 4.3 phone was completely wiped and reset to factory, have been having this issue since the upgrade. I don't have any other performance related issues, nor battery drain issues - well not constantly, sometimes I get a battery drain, mostly not...

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.

I would suggest that you try to boot your phone into safe mode to see if the problem may be related to any 3rd party app that you have installed in your phone:

It is better in safe mode, but still can't handle opening messages, so it will open the app straight away, but going into a message thread is slow (better, but still very slow) and if there are MMS pictures in the thread it stops gets crashy and takes some seconds to continue scrolling.

So better, but still not usable.

That sound strange. Do you have a lot SMS and MMS in your phone?

You could try to reinstall the phone software using PC Companion:

http://www.sonymobile.com/update

In PC Companion, press start on Support Zone > Start on Update the phone/tablet software > click on the blue highlight (Repair my phone/tablet). Do this without the phone connected. Follow the instructions on screen to perform the repair.

Before repairing the software in your device you may want to backup your information first. Check out this topic for more information on how to:
http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/FAQ/Backup-amp-Transfer/m-p/407253#U407253

Before restoring the backup, try the messaging app a few times to see if it works better or not.

Just download Google's Hangouts and set it to handle your SMS.
