WH-1000MX3 only charging when turned on

About a month ago I plugged in my WH-1000MX3s and they wouldn't charge. After resetting them and following instructions from various forums, I noticed they would still charge when the headphones were switched on. Obviously this is the exact opposite of how they are meant to work. I've seen a few other people on other forums mention this issue, but as of yet haven't found a solution. Does anyone have any ideas?

I guess it's not a huge issue given they do still charge, but I am concerned that charging them whilst they're turned on might damage the headphones in some way. Would this be the case?

Also try a different USB cable if possible.
