Portable Radio XDR-P1DBP

The plastic Hold/Power slide switch ***** has broken. It is a very poor flimsy design which is a cost saving disgrace on what is a good Sony product. I have tried a couple of Sony spares suppliers, but no luck so far. I have seen other published complaints about this very fragile switch ***** but with no solutions offered. I can activate the switch by carefully inserting a very small screwdriver blade into the slot in the case and moving the tiny plastic switch lever sideways. Has anyone out there found a supplier of this part?

Thanks.

Hi Sparky,

Welcome to the community.

You can try here for spares for your radio. Let us know how you get on.

Best wishes,

Ed

Hello,  I've already tried EET, but they can't help. I've twice emailed my local Regional Service Centre in Birmingham, but have had no reply, as yet. I've got their phone number, so will try ringing them during the week.

It's a nice portable radio. Shame about the very flimsy on/hold finger operated switch k**b. Not allowed to write the proper  word as part of it was automatically asterisked out in my earlier email! I suppose I could call it a digitally operated slide switch contact movement initiator handle. Sounds impressive, doesn't it?

Best wishes,

Sparky.

Hi Sparky,

I have the same problem, as do many, with the on/off switch. I wondered if you got yours sorted?

Thanks,

Brian

Hello, no, I reluctantly gave up trying after taking the radio to bits to
get to the switch which fell apart completely and I couldn't get it back
together again. AND no spares available. So I bought something different
after trying a number of alternatives, all of which were difficult to set
up or had some other problem. I eventually settled for a Sony ICF-P26 which
has been OK, so far, and an Asda ONN, Pocket Radio PR-03.
I liked the XDR-P1DBP, shame about the flimsy switch ***** and the lack of a
spare part for it.
Cheers.

I've had the same problem. It's obviously a design fault. The sliding on/off switch is so flimsy it's a wonder it lasted longer than 5 minutes. Spoke to Sony call center and after a 15 minute call got the standard answer: 'If it's in the guarantee period take it back to retailer for a replacement. If it's older bad luck. Nothing can be done.' Spares route no go. Now using small screwdriver. Brilliant radio except for the switch. Shame on you Sony.

Same here - TWICE. I returned the first one after 4 weeks use (2019) with non functioning on/off switch. The replacement unit has JUST failed! with a non-functioning switch stuck in locked mode!

I had the same problem, with even the plastic rocker broken from the switch and the switch loosened in its socket (after years of good service by the way). I removed the switch component (SW11) and soldered two small wires to connector 1 and 3 (out of the 5 bottom pins grouped by three and two pins) and routed them outside the case through the removed plastic switch. For now this is a quick fix so I can at least turn the radio on and off by holding the wires together for a brief moment.

Shared this because it might help others too. Disclaimer: i just trial and errored this by connecting wires until i found out which pin did what. It might break my radio later, this is not a recommended fix, but it works for me (no experience with fixing radio(switche)s).

Replaced a 3 year old XDR-P1DBP 2 weeks ago and the slide switch has failed on the new product already.

Would seem to be a recurrent issue that needs to be addressed.

Sorry to hear about that pal, you can contact Sony directly to check if this is a part they can provide or you can replace it yourself. Or, if you can send it someone potentially.
