Please, help needed for nVidia dedicated memory

Hello guys,
I've got a VGN-FE41M with 256MB nVidia 7400 but actually i've got the following in my display settings' adapter tab;

total available graphics memory: 335MB
Dedicated video memory: 64MB
System video memory: 0
Shared system memory: 271MB

i apologies for my ignorance, but i think i should have 128MB dedicated video memory (128 shared). I checked it in the system bios settings but couldn't find any option to increase the memory. Will it remain 64MB or there is a way to increase the dedicated memory. Please help needed. :slight_frown:

Regards
Asim

Hi Asim,

It is all automatic in Vista. There is no way to change the dedicated memory - and there is absolutely no point in trying to do so.

Vista stops any attempt by the user or an application to 'ring fence' memory allocation because the majority of system crashes and blue-screens were caused by this in XP.

However, WDDM will switch VRAM and RAM on the fly and will allocate the system resources to give you the best performance.
:wink:

256MB is pretty good.

Thanks for you reply :slight_smile:
Actually i was installing a game (S.T.A.L.K.E.R) and the recommended requirements for this game was 128MB and during installation it highlighted 64MB as a warning to increase it to 128MB. But i manage to install the game and now it is working fine, but any way if vista is increasing the memory itself according to the load of the game then this is nice, i don't have to do any thing. Also i have noticed that there isn't any option in the system bios as well to change the memory range. What if i am using XP??? :thinking:

Not sure if XP has that feature, but I think it's more controlled by the drivers.
