High Temperatures

Hi all

Having a little bit of trouble with temperatures on my AR-31S.

I am using CoreTemp found Here

and am getting 60 degrees results on both cores, sometimes pushing 70.

I have also used speedfan found Here and that returns only a core 0 and core 1 temp of around 45 degrees.

PCWizard found Here returns more alarming results found below....

It really is very hot at the back of my machine. Has anyone else had this problem?

SIW is very good also for backing up serial numbers for programs you have - this is found under licences

Also it is good for finding passwords and wep keys - found under secrets

All round brillient program!

May i suggest that if you processor is running very hot you use the Intel SpeedStep technology.

In Vista:

Click start and type "power options" and click enter

Click on "Change Plan Settings" for whichever power plan you are currently using

Click on "Change Advanced Power Settings"

Scroll down to "Processor Power Management" and expand the options

Expand the "Minimum Processor State" - This is the maximum frequency used when there is little of no load on the processor - Set this very low ie. 5%

Expand the "Maximum Processor State" - This is the Maximum freqency the processor can achieve - If you are having major heat issues under load then you can effectively downgrade your processor by setting this lower - Set this to about 70%

You will have limited the proformance but you will save your legs!

You could use this information and create a new power plan which you can impliment when heat is an issue.

For XP:

In control Panel there should be much the same power options but i am not entirly sure.

You do require a SpeedStep enabled processor. All Core2Duo processors are compatable.

Enjoy

Nice guide Matt

Prior to posting the thread I reduced my Maximum processor state to 50%.

Just to let you know i am in conversation with Laurent at PC Wizard about the bug. Have sent him some file dumps and they are looking into it. Will keep you informed!

Well, I think this problem is because of the compromise of design, cooling and loudness. If you get a Notebook, you get always a compromise solution.

60-70°C is pretty fine, 90°C is hot but still within specification of Intels Core CPU. And it should not become a problem.

Well, things like that can help. Better is to apply some air below the notebook. 2-3 cm and the fans are much more efficiet.

...
The Minimum Powerstate of 5% is pointless, because this is controlled by the CPU core clock.

Set it to 60% and you get ~800MHz (Core Solo ULV, core clock is 8). Less is not possible with this CPU. Set it to 65% and you get 800MHz too.
Set it to 80% and you get a ~1GHz (core clock is 9). 100% and you get a core clock of 10. (1330MHz). Well, I'm talking about a CoreCole ULV CPU but it works to a Core2Duo.

They all seem to be much the same with minor differences.

Seems little point having a fast processor and turning it down - I find the 'Balanced' power plan works pretty well. It switches automatically between 1.0GHz, 1.3GHz, 1.7GHz and 2.0GHz according to demand. I would doubt that any manual settings would be more efficient.

Thanks Blencogo

At least I know that they should be warm to the touch when typing, and I now have a fan heater for the Winter.
Thanks to everyone who posted here.

Edit:

Remarkably a few days after reducing the minimum processor to 50% I now have this reading even after the unit being on all night. Strange eh? LOL

Many thanks to Rich912 for this suggestion a few days ago.

Pshaw! My A317S can register 97 degrees and still not burst into flames. When I’m having a hot flush the combination is like being in a sauna. Softie. You’ll be acting like a Southerner next and whingeing on about not wanting to take your vest off until there’s no more frost on the inside of the windows in the mornings.

Wow you take your vest's off... :anguished:
