I have a week old FE41S - i have read lots of threads on the forum about the same problem as mine - I closed the lid and the machine went to sleep but when i opened the lid i could not get the machine to boot up properly.
The lights come on and you can eject the disk etc.
People have suggested updating the bios etc, but I have a bigger problem - whereas in other threads people are able to get the machine on by holding down the power button etc, this doesnt work on mine. I have tried removing the battery, holding the power button down etc etc i managed one time to get it to start and it went into safe mode but when i rebooted it i couldnt get it to restart. I have tried and tried but to no avail - the lights come on and go off but nothing else happens.
Thanks
Craig
Hi Craig,
It sounds like you will need to phone Sony Support as all is not as it should be. I would give them a ring HERE
Did you make a set of Recovery Discs? If so have you tried booting with the System Disc in the drive?
Do you get anything on the screen when you try to boot? Have you tried tapping F10 when you start to boot?
Did you buy the Vaio from a retail shop - you are probably entitled to return it and ask for an exchange or refund.

I got there in the end - I left the machine on until it ran out of battery (removing the battery didn't work) and when i tried again it booted up, i updated the bios and so far so good.
That's just wierd!!
Hopefully it will be OK now the BIOS is updated but I have never heard of having to run the battery down before.
Anyway, glad you've sorted it.

Installed the latest Alcohol 120% surposedly ready for vista and had to enter the bios on boot F3>F8 advanced options and select 'last known good config' to retrieve a BSOD AR 31S from certain death. I noticed after a battery boot up that certain wireless settings and other essencial functions had changed and was forced to reformat
. Moral of the story stay away from virtual disk programs unless someone knows of a program like Daemon tools that does work with Sonys flavour of vista
I also had this problem with Alcohol 120%.
Useless it is, don't use it on vista.
Virtual machine with XP, works fine now and i can make back ups again.
