I have a VGN-A497XP and it seems to be randomly shutting down and an error message appears stating that the driver is in a continuing loop, referencing the above error code.
I have a feeling this has to do with the graphics as I have noticed some strange dotted lines appearing in the microsoft logo on log in. But I am hoping someone might know a quick (and easy) fix
Hi Annie1978 and welcome to Club Vaio.
I think you are right, this sounds like an 'old driver' issue. Which ATI Mobility Radeon X600 Driver are you using - there may be an update available.
Start -> Right-click on My Computer -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager
Click on the little cross next to Video Adapter and you should see your ATI Graphics Card.
Double-click on it and click on the Driver Tab. What version and date is the driver?
What are you doing usually when it shuts down? Playing games? Does your Vaio seem very hot?

hi,
well, it is version 6.14.10.6512... hope that makes sence?
To be honest I don't need to be 'doing' anything. I have had a new hard drive installed and it still continues to happen, sometimes dueing start up, or after hybernation or even when trying to load programs like Limewire etc... so I can't really point out if it is linked to 'doing' anything...
thanks by the way
There is an updated driver available from Sony A497XP Downloads. Follow the instructions on the first screen carefully - you need to uninstall the existing driver first.
I'm sure I have seen this problem before. Sony and ATI have a poor record of updating drivers. If the problem continues, you may need to look at drivers from other sources like Omega.

thanks. I have done the reinstall and will wait to see if I continue to get the error. Can you tell me if this has anything to do with the dotted lines I get through graphics? For example, I see it first with the Microsoft logo when I start up. It looks like someone has stitched vertical lines through the logo. Strange, I know, but I also see it through the Norton Go back and in the Vaio screen saver. It distorts it quiet badly. If these 2 issues are interlinked... the stiching is still there, even after download.
I am sorry to keep firing questions, I am not a PC wiz and the SOny tech guys keep giving me the run around.
hi,
the download suggested hasn't worked. I have had a few shut downs since.
any other suggestions?
That's a shame but it doesn't really surprise me. As I said I'm sure I have seen this problem before and can't remember a solution.
Any A-Series Vaio owners out there who have tried any Omega Catalyist drivers and can recommend one?
