Is it correct that Android TVs won't support 4K video from a home network connected server? This is what the note in the help article for my TV stated (Article ID : 00163347).
My experience is that 4K movies streamed from my NAS to my KD55-AF8 have choppy video and audio, certainly not watchable.
Can anyone confirm , or if there's a solution.
Thanks
Peter
You can stream 4k content via dlna without issue, the only limit is the bitstream required by the specific content (normally a video recorded with a camera is very high) and the speed of the network connection (keeping in mind that the wired one is more reliable but capped at 100mbps)
Thanks for your reply. You seem to be suggesting the note is a red herring!
I was streaming content from a well known sports camera 4k edited movie; the TV is connected by 5GHz wifi. No idea what the bit rate is: I can't find that info on my router.
I subsequently created a small movie from my 4K Sony camera, rendered it at 4K and this streamed fine from the NAS, although it was less than 2 minutes duration.
So many variables, so many devices - so difficult to be sure of end to end compatibility!
Unfortunately due to the requirements video from a camera like go-pro are 140 mbps or more (a Blu-ray movie if often around 40mbps).Out of reach for the lan, difficult to mantain via WiFi. One possible solution could be to find a compatible usb gigabit lan adapter and cabling the connection to the router.
I've done a bit more research and found that my router typically supports at least 400Mbps over WiFi. The NAS is connected to the router via a Gigabit Ethernet connection. So I can't see why a 4K mp4 file can't be played back smoothly to the TV if bit rate is the issue. Perhaps the TV is the issue; shouldn't it buffer if it can't handle the speed?
Your router may support it for your entire network your tv surely not. And WiFi especially 5ghz is often unstable to support a steady bandwidth . You can only be sure if you are on a lan and with a bandwidth higher than the 100mbps of the tv
You may check if the tv has problems with the video regardless of the network by putting it directly on a usb stick on the tv
I will try that.
Took a while to try, but eventually I put the 4K video on a USB stick and plugged into the TV - it played without a problem.
I'm currently investigating my EE hub (although I don't think it's that as I can play 4K video on my Mac streamed from the NAS via the hub).
It seems to me 4K streaming is indeed an issue with this Sony TV.
Be good if someone from Sony can confirm!
