Xperia 1 ii Proximity sensor sensitivity

Hi, I've some problems with the proximity sensor. Actually it works but the problem is that it is too sensitive. When I'm on a call and get the phone close to me head, the screen goes off but if my hands move just for few millimeters, then the sensor activates and the screen turns on and then again goes off, so usually the screen will be touched by my ear. Which as a result I can't keep walking and talking cause for sure the screen will get on couple of times. And if I hold the phone exactly at the same location the screen stays off. Can you please confirm if your sensor is as this sensitive? Or there is something wrong with my phone. I'm sure that on all my older Xperia phones it is not like this.

how are you holding your phone?

I had the same issue when I first got my Xperia 5 (which is larger than my previous phone), since I angled the upper part of the phone far away from my ear, so the screen went on and I touched different stuff (e.g. mute mic).

After noticing the issue was me holding the phone wrong, I now make sure the upper part is flush on my ear and haven't had any issues since then (January 2020).

My God, man, did you read this thread at all? It has already been written here that the phone has been replaced and the problem was still present. This is not a damaged proximity sensor !

• Either there is a design error (I don't assume ...)

• Or it can be fixed by software

What can you do?

1. When you pick up the call or start calling, then press the power/lock button. This will prevent the phone from being active during a call. (I've already written it here!)
2. Return your device and buy a new device from another brand.

I agree with Deexer, if the hardware component sensor was replaced/repaired and the issue is still there, this means it"s the software that's acting up.

So locking the screen whilst near your ear, seems the appropriate answer, or use a headset, or return if you don't fancy doing so with every call.

I also used to had this issue.

It comes from the fact that actually the phone is taller than normal.

When you hold your phone, if you hold it in such a way that the bottom part is where you are used to, the top part gets farther away from the head, above the ear.

You might also notice that the sound from the earpiece is weak.

But if you hold it that the top part is centered on your ear, even if at first it seems unnatural because it is tall, you will no longer have this issue.

And also the sound will greatly improve

I have the Xperia 1 which is exactly the same size as Xperia 1 II without
this problem! So probably I know how to hold the phone.

I'm having the same issue. Didn't have this with XZ Premium. I've found that if you have a flip cover, just put the cover over the screen and that stops it or lock the screen with the power button. Not great though and hope they release a fix

Same phone, same issue - Does it happen when the phone is 90 degrees upright or is this when holding it in an angle? According to Sony, it is per design, that the proximity sensor / screen off only works when the phone is upright ( an angle above 45 degrees). This makes the phone useless for me, since I always tilt my phone a bit when talking. Sony will not fix it, so I'm buying a new phone from another maker.

Sorry but this doesn't make any sense. It wasn't you holding the phone wrong, it is the phone that has a serious problem.

There's no other phone in any brand with this problem. This is pathetic. I own the Xperia 5 II and it has the same problem. I can't use this thing next to my ear because the screen is constantly turning on and off and activating stuff with my face. It's really bad and they don't even have a tool to calibrate their mess. Never, ever, had this problem with any other brand, not even with cheap phones. They should have removed this phone from the market and return the money to all.

Did you try to check the ear proximity sensor test from the support app, there might be an issue with it.
