My phone is displaying the voice mail icon. I have no further (voice) messages but the icon remains. How can I delete it?

pull down the notification bar > swipe it to the side.
Already did that, but the icon is still there. Any other option?
Done! I finally forced detention of the relephone services app. It worked!
That's odd but I'm glad that it's gone now.
