Wifi unstable --> battery drain

One day I will get to the bottom of why my phone will periodically decide to try and cook itself by discharging the battery.

Caught some good evidence today, while it was eating the battery, the wifi signal was in and out for over an hour, which causes the dreaded Google play services to wake up, and keep everything else awake while doing something terribly important a lot.

Chickens and eggs, was the signal bad because so much current was being consumed by play services, was the phones wifi bad or was the router bad?

Perhaps others with the battery discharge issue could grab the same screen shot and see if wifi is the culprit for them.

I have the same problem with WiFi and off, the issue was Google Play services, this is what I did

settings > apps > all > google play services > clear data > uninstall updates > restart the phone > update the app > check again .

Still collecting info, I set it to a different AP at work today, same effect, no problem at all at home.

Both work APs are in the 5 GHz band, home is in the 2.4 GHz band.
