unable to read text messages

my phone has been turning its self off & on over the last few days and since Ive had difficulty reading text messages. They appear in the notification bar, but when I select it to read them or go into the message area they don't appear in my message list! I've tried deleting messages & conversations incase the inbox is full but thats made no difference. I have also turned the phone off & removed the battery for a min or 2 then replaced it & switched it back on but again, I still can't reas the messages.

 Would appreciate any help and suggestions!

Did you installed some new apps before device autoreboot?

If yes try to remove these apps and clean the cache of message app from android app list

Try also to reboot your phone in safe mode (the device with load OS with only stock apps) and verify if messages issue persists.

If no issue in safe mode make a factory reset of your xperia.

To enable safe mode:

1. Turn off the device.
2. Press and hold down the power key  until the phone vibrates.
3. Wait until the Xperia™ logotype disappears.
4. Press and hold the volume down key. The device then restarts in safe mode.
5. To exit safe mode, restart the device.

It sounds to me that you phone have reset the time and date so your new message are sorted in the bottom of the conversation inbox and in the top when you are in the right conversation. 

For example: If the phone date is set to 1980, the phone will sort the message as they was received in 1980. 

Check the time and date setting in your phone and change it back to the right one. Then you should get your new message sorted the right way again.
