How does stay awake work in Z2?

Anyone knows how the Z2 stay awake function works... is it front camera or gravity sensor or anything else...
If I watch pictures with the phone lieing on the desk on it's side the phone goes dimm and off after 15 sec. When I place it in my hand and do funny faces it goes off again, when I'm holding it straight it doesn't go dimm and OFF... whats the point? Does it work on face recognition or palm temperature or some touch sensors in alu frame? And if so why it doesn't work in all situations even if the room is bright and I see my face mirrored on the screen? Just curious what to do to make it work eachtime using chrome or reading articles without touching screen every half minute.

I've noticed this on the Xperia Z and Z1, it seems to be a temperature issue, as something similar happen while playing games or watching videos

Ee..not really my point, sorry for misunderstanding, I had the backlight of screen in mind. The mysterious new Z2 and 3 feature. I don't quite get it why it works and Times it doesn't. Is that an apps feature only or should it work on mainscreen too.

Got it

Smart backlight control

The smart backlight control keeps the screen on as long as the device is held in your hand. Once you put down the device, the screen turns off according to your sleep setting.

To turn on the Smart backlight control function
  1. From your Home screen, tap .
  2. Find and tap Settings > Display > Smart backlight control.
  3. Drag the slider beside Smart backlight control to the right.
