Bought a new Sony Vaio XL-301, I now have two desktops running at home
Main PC
* Runs Windows XP
* Wired connection to my router (Netgear DG834GT)
* Controller in terms of network connections etc
Living Room PC
* Sony VAIO XL-301
* Wireless connection using Intel PRO Wireless 3945ABG adapter
Problem:
* Router publishes SSID (NETGEAR)
* Sony Vaio XL-301 picks this up (although signal either low or poor)
* Every time I select "connect", I get windows error stating that I cannot connect. Diagnosis options suggest moving router closer etc.
* This makes no sense - as a workaround to the problem, I have used a USB adapter that came with my Netgear package (WG111T) and this successfully connects wirelessly!
* (Also note I place the aerial for the internal wireless connection closer to router than the USB adapter, so I dont think its a signal issue)
My conclusion is that there is a problem with the internal wireless card. To get round this I have downloaded the latest drivers from Intel for the 3945ABG adapter, but this still brought about the same failure. Have contacted both Sony Vaio and Netgear re the problem, but they pretty much concluded the same thing, and advised me to get in touch with the forever incontactable folks down at Intel...
Disappointing that Sony dont take a bit more ownership here, whilst the XL-301 is impressive, it's no point having it if the supplied network adapter is limited.
Anyone else seen this problem/ kind of thing, would be grateful for help as completely lost???
Know what you mean, had a friend who had low wireless coverage, in the end I moved a power cable away from his arial and it went back to 54mbit and works well now.
