TWO MAIN FIRMWARE UPDATES IN MY VIEW

Hi All

I've been watching the threads as of lately and there seems to be quite a bit about people's dissatisfaction with the vaio pocket. As I mentioned on a previous thread I already had sent my vaio pocket back to Sony because I was having a nightmare of a time with the battery. It's vastly improved now but it still is no way near the 20 hours. I mean I'm a student and I forked out the bones of ¿450 for this thing and to be honest I'm pretty much happy with everything else besides

1 the no way near 20 hour battery
2 the fact that transferring mp3 is still so shrouded with have to do this and have to do that or else it won't work
3 the fact that you cannot put photos in folders with meaningful names

But lets focus on the positives here I've owned the iRiver ihp340
and I've owned an iPod and I must say that the user interface on this thing is pretty much above the other two. That wheel on the iPod is the most annoying thing in the World and the iRiver is basically a hard drive with some bonus features like fm radio which is exactly the reason why I need to carry my music around with me because of the crap they play on the radio.

So I think that the main updates needed are: definitely the battery drain needs to be solved and mp3 transfer needs to be tweaked. The photo thing is not top priority at the moment. If these two things were solved then this is really quite a fine player if you think about it! You've all been beautiful Goodnight and thank you

I would like to say that I pretty much agree with you with the couple of areas you highlighted. I will say that I'm really happy with my 40Gb VP.

I would like to see support for these sony players in Musicmatch Jukebox (or any other 3rd party software) - I would like to think sony driving this, especially as the new video/mp3 player we've all seen the links for doesn't use SS anymore - although I can't see it happening.

There are a few other things, but really not as important. How about a online skin creator. How about a some aftermarket hardware (car charger, speakers/cradle system etc..)

How about some kind of news / feedback / statements from Sony on the future of this product?

Most people who come to forums are generally people who are dissapointed or unhappy with their Vaio Pocket. I own a 40GB version, and I pretty much use it everyday. Regarding the 20 hour battery life, I get about 18 hours before the firmware upgrade, and I get about 23 hours now. I'm a University student and use the Vaio Pocket about 4 hours a day (hence I only charge it about once a week).

I know that for most people, being unable to transfer mp3s in and out of the Vaio Pocket is a bad thing, but I'm actually not too fussed about it. I've previously owned 4 Creative mp3 players - and believe it or not, only ONE (Muvo 2)of them can be used as USB Mass Storage Devices (Creative Nomad II MG, Creative Muvo 2, Creative Zen Xtra 40GB, Creative Zen Touch 20GB). I changed to the Vaio Pocket after my Zen Touch died - with not reason!

PS: iRiver mp3 players have the highest hard drive failures, followed by Apple iPods!

Most of the problems that people have, can be easily fixed with a firmware update. It's true that I find the photo viewer annoying at times, but it's not a life or death situation. I'm happy with the way the Vaio Pocket is - especially with recent addition of the address book!

I think the expression, 'let's not throw the baby out with the bath water' comes to mind.

Ok, there are some, mainly software issues, with the machine, though if we all use this forum as it's intended and help each other everything should work out in the end. Josharle is a case in point, he got of his backside and developed an address book. Whilst I dont have that need now, this is a great example of how someone got on with it and developed a new use for the player. We need more people like this!

Let's get the best out of our VP, not slag them off and slate SONY as a corporate oppressor. Sony make great devices, this one's having a few teething problems just now (hope that didnt sound too niave!).

My wish list would have the picture viewer at the top, a damn good manual would also help!! Some aftermarket products would be cool too.

Re. the battery issue, I once read that a new battery never gives top performance and that it has to charge and discharge over a period of time before it gets up to optimal performance. Maybe this is the issue that everyone is having with their device?

I'm not posting often here, even if I'm a VP owner... (that may be 'cause I'm French ... ^^) ... But I just wanted to say I totally agree with it here... I got my VP for Xmas (the 40Gb one) and even if it's having some pbs, I DO enjoy it... ^^ I also tried the Ipods, and they aren't that good after all, the "finger contolling way" is randomly done, lol.... Whereas the Vaio pocket has no problem concerning that...

In the particularly needed firmwares updates I'd add a skin editor, and an easier way to add lyrics to the songs, 'cause it's here, but nobody seems to really use it... (because of Sonicstage and the songs-lyrics compatibility?)

I also noticed that the most wanted firmware update was the video compatibility... Off course it'd be great... But personnally I bought the VP just to listen to music... Now it depends on Sony... If they just want to make the VP even greater or just correct the pbs on it, as a music player ^^

Here's what I think, ... I might be wrong about some things, but overall, I think the Vaio is the best music player ever ^^

(scuse me for my english if i've done some mistakes 😉 )

Having previously owned an IPOD & an IRiver the Sony PV, in my view, beats them in every dept, but most importantly, in sound quality - Though not when using the Sony Ear plugs it came with!

Although the music transfer from PC to PV is perhaps not the fastest (though the difference is minimal) I found the transfer process using both Sonic Stage & the Vaio Music Transfer system very easy to use. The design of the machine compared with others is very good (the IRiver was a nightmare to use) and I have had no problems with battery life.

If I had to criticize anything it probably would be the volume level (lack of) and the bloody awful headphones they supply with it.
