premiere 6

Hi guys,
i've invested in a new vaio FE41M because I want to do video editing on it. it came with vista, so that's where the problem started. it continued with me wanted to use my old premiere 6 software, as I got my head round this one and I like it.
The good news is, that it works and I can edit in it, the bad news is that I cant seem to be able to capture with it. It tells me "cant connect to capture driver".
Any ideas out there? I also had an attempt at downgrading to XP, but couldnt make the system fucntion properly and when I installed preniere it still showed the dame error message re capture...
can anyone help???
thanks mira!

Hi postmanpatty and welcome to Club Vaio.

You are a true optomist expecting Premiere 6 to run on Vista!!!

Are you trying to capture Analogue Video or DV/iLink?

I have heard that Premiere 6 does not run properly in Vista because it will not render the timeline and will not allow export of DV AVI - so even if you can capture it you will still have problems.

Have you tried running it in XP SP2 Compatability Mode? Try finding premiere.exe and right-clicking on it. Go to the "Compatibility" tab, click on "show settings for all users."

In the next screen check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select "Windows XP Service Pack 2" from the drop down box. Then check the box next to "run as an administrator." Click OK until you escape!!

Worth a try???? If not then it looks like Premiere Elements 3.0!!

I suggest that if you want to run Premiere 6 then you use a virtual machine with XP installed as it saves a lot of trouble with the drivers etc.

Premiere is an excellent program although if you really want to use vista then you may consider upgrading to Premiere Pro or just stick with the less functional elements package.

hi, thanks for replying. sorry, i'm new to the forums, couldnt find my own post anymore - had to google it and found it in the french forum, did I post it there by accident? are they all interconnected?

anyway - i'd be gutted to be stuck with premiere elements, since i thought I was clever to invest in a super vaio laptop so I can do what I want to do with it!! even considering to sell this machine again. disappointed with what I got...all the specs are great, but vista sucks.

how do I run virtual XP? I'd happy to downgrade proper but seems complicated (most annoying!)

thanks

Well download Virtual PC2007.

Install it (Doesn't officially support HP but works fine so don't worry).

Run it and create a new virtual machine with the XP settings.

Stick an XP disc in the CD drive boot up your virtual PC (Start) and it should boot from the disc and install XP.

It is basically another computer within yours. Just install XP as you normally would and then install premiere 6. You can then boot it up whenever you need it and you don't have all the problems associated with changing OS.

Any Problems just ask!

32Bit because you have a 32Bit OS.

Hi Guys,

well, I installed virtual PC and installed XP and premiere. The display resolution was all weird and stretched out, and Premiere tells me that the DV device is unavailable for device control...

...nice try, back to square one...

I did try the compatibility mode thing and it doesnt make a difference. I'm trying to capture with i-link. analogue would be great but I'm not even going there...

so frustrated, wish I hadnt bothered buying this machine in the first place...
any more ideas anyone?
thanks for your help, Mira!
