My laptop has been stolen!

Yes guys, i was in a pub and a friend went to the toilet, me to buy a drink and the another one came downstairs to receive a friend and my laptop was inside my bag liying on the floor. After 10 seconds i just realized that and when i came back, my bag wasn t there anymore. It was a VGN-FE41Z. I kept a BIOS password. Do you know how could the thief or anybody avoid or reset it?

I assume that you have reported this theft to the Police?

You should also inform Vaio-Link. They will take the following action:
They should send you an email in which you will be informed of the following:

- The serial number (assuming that you have not made a note of this).
- A request to send them a copy of the police report so they can flag the unit as stolen in their database.
- A request for contact details of the police department handling this theft so they can inform them as soon as someone calls for support with this SN.

I hope that you have insurance?

This is certainly a sad event. Can I just say I thing hopefully without causing offence, I would think the best thing would be for no one to mention how the password could be sneaked round, just incase say you stole it and are trying to get round it As I say no offence meant, just caution.

Don t worry about that. I will report the theft tomorrow at the police station and then report to sony. About the password break there s no problem, i just would know if just vaio assistence can reset that, because it works like this, my laptop have to be taken to them and then be checked by somebody who will consult the sn.

About the insurance, i didn t do that. I am a foreign and i bought it one month ago and i am leaving the country at the beginning of July, and even because i didn t know that. It s a shame, but I hope the thief would be caugh. The barman at the pub told me the police would give a dvd with the CCTV record. I guess i don t want to it once i will be furious watching a guy taking my laptop, logitech G5 laser and my ipod usb cable and my 7 years old bag that have travelled everywhere with me....

Oh man, i don t think so. It s not cool to do that and even because i don t have insurance though.
By the way, i still having the box and manuals and blah blah blha...including the battery. Do you know if i can find the sn number on these things, or it is just written underneath the laptop?

I would have thought it would be on the box, but no guarantee. Yes it would be quite naughty to tell porkies really, but It's a real arse when you lose or have something nicked and you're out of pocket.

You should find the serial number on the box, or, if you registered your Vaio you may find your serial number here ..

That sucks! I'm terrified of having this thing stolen and it never leaves the house.

I know apierc1 was joking, but a word of warning... The insurance company would almost certainly want to see the police report. If someone claimed a laptop had been stolen from their house and not a pub when they contacted the insurance company they would probably end up in jail while the actual thief would get a slap on the wrist and sent on outward bound exercises on tropical isles! When I dropped my laptop last December I put in a perfectly legitimate claim with my insurance company and they wanted me to get an independent report and then they got one of their own. The whole two months I was waiting for them to pay up, I was half expecting the police to turn up at any moment! In the end they valued it at £500 more than I'd expected!

Sorry for the rant, but things like this really *#@$ me off. Thanks Tony for giving the scum out there more rights than us good guys!
