Hi,
I upgraded to Vista Ultimate. I had the same sound problem reported on Thread 39831 and successfully applied the solution (brilliant) from 'robosheb' and others.
viz.
Start->Control Panel->Programs and Features.
Right click on SigmaTel and uninstall.
Force the computer to go into hibernate mode (no reboot necessary).
When it came out of hibernate the drivers were reinstalled and worked.
It worked. Except that it only gives the S/PDIF as the output, and not the speakers.
Does anyone know how to enable the speakers please?
Thanks,
Hiran
Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Sound
Click on the picture of a speaker that says "Speakers/Headphones" next to it and click the button at the bottom that says "Set Default" and you should get sound through the speakers!

Hi thanks. Normally there would be that choice. However, with this new Vista driver the only choice shown is Optical. (Yes, I have selected 'show disabled devices').
Anybody else have AR11M and Vista?
Hiran
Hi Hiran,
A long shot but try installing KB929685 first.
Then run your fix again to reinstall the HiDef sound drivers - hopefully the Hotfix will prevent the Audio Devices from going AWOL.
DOWNLOAD KB929685

Normally there would be that choice.

When I roll to back to XP driver Windows Media Player (or any other) do not play at all (though all options of output choices are shown).
Thanks for the tip - but says 'this update is not relevant to your system' OWTTE (or words to that effect. just made that one up!)
You could try uninstalling the driver restart properly and use the driver here when it asks you to supply a driver.
