Yes it's possible to work out the shutter count from the file count if you've owned the camera from new. Unfortunately there's no way of detecting whether the count has been reset, or whether the four-digit file count available in the Display menu is the 'first time round' or not.
While it seems unlikely that the camera doesn't record this information as metadata, I'm pretty sure the data is locked and only available Sony engineers. You'll need some kind of software key or specialised app to read it.
Cheers

Hello Sirleslie - Welcome to the Sony Forums
As far as I am aware, the only way to get an indication of the shutter count on this camera is to take a note of the filename that is used on each new shot. This will however be inaccurate if you have reset the file counter at any point.
Thanks,
Simon

If you upload the last photo taken with your camera into this website link, you will get an "image count" approximately in the midddle of the list of details. It works with all Sony cameras, NEX models included.
