I just came across this thread. https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/xperia-5/tele-lens-not-working/m-p/3650120/thread-id/519#M520
and I tried testing it by covering the lens and cycling thru them in both good and bad light situations,,
and sure is the telephoto doesn't work in low light situations..
any ideas why? I felt cheated 😞
Because the telephoto lens has less light coming into it thanks to being f2.8 Vs 1.7 on the main lens.
The phone detects that light is low and instead of using the f2.8, will default to the better light sensitivity of the 1.7 and just zoom on that one to 2x.
The result will be that the zoomed f1.7 image will be brighter, sharper with less noise (the f2.8 would have to have either a slower shutter or more iso to compensate the low light)
the thing is it's not consistent with how it determines how bright or dark a scene is, I've tried covering the telephoto lens while zoomed at 2x. it will try shift constantly to zoomed main camera and the telephoto lens,, anyways it's not something that can be changed now. just something that annoys me.
