Hi, I have the same problem on my vaio vgn-fe31h. THe computer can play system sounds , but no other audio. the strange thing is , when i switch computer on, as it is booting up ,it will play audio, until booting up has finished then it wont! It has gone like this before but after a day or so sound returned. THis time it hasnt. According to the sound and audio section on control panel, i have no audio driver installed, but this cant be the case! also according to this, all devices are working properly
Ive tried doing system restore. When this happens , audio returns. HOwever Mcafee tells me computer is not protected and needs to fix problems- when problems are fixed audio is gone again!
can anyone help?

maybe you can try and re-install your audio card drivers and see if that fixes the problem because if a system restore is fixing the problem then your drivers are possibly corrupted

thanks for the reply ! that seems to make sense, only thing is , how do i reinstall audio card drivers??
if you or anyone can tell me this id be very grateful
