Broken HDD on PCG-TR5MP - Help?

Hey there,

As it seems, the hard disk on my PCG-TR5MP is about to die. The system is often blocked for minutes and you hear those nice sounds of the harddisk. No hard-/software was installed just before the failure. The system is still running, but not stable anymore. Sometimes, Windows is not even able to boot up.

So, it looks as if I have to change my drive. Does anyone have experience with this? Can the standard hard disk be replaced by another manufacturer's hard disk? Are there any BIOS issues?

Or, is there some piece of software that alows you to block the devective sectors on the drive?

I got some great input from this forum in the past, I hope you'll be able to help me again.

Changing the Hard drive is a fairly simple affair compared so some hardware.

You have an IDE drive. Here you can find all the hard drives that you could buy and install in your notebook.

Personally i would suggest the Fujitsu 100GB disk (Better than the 40GB you had before!)

Underneath the laptop there should be a "hatch" for the hard drive which should mean that it is easy to get out and replace. You must buy a 2.5" hard disk as the standard desktop drives are 3.5" and are too big.

Hi celway,

Unfortunately replacing the hard drive in a TR series is a little more complicated than suggested by Matt Wilson.

Firstly you will need a 1.8”, not a 2.5” drive and you may wish to consider either the Toshiba MK6006GAH (60Gb) or the Hitachi C4K60 (also 60Gb).
