Best battery management and maintenance

Hey,

To my mind battery technology is still the critical point in mobility. Many times I run my computer statically on my desktop and I decided to remove the battery (fully discharged) and work plugged to AC.

Do you know which is the optimal battery management when working at home? I mean, should I leave it inside the laptop charging and discharging continously?

When the battery is full the power goes straight to the motherboard so the battery is bypassed altogether. (Not sure if i believe this but its what the manual says!).

Personally i leave the battery in at all times and whenever i have a socket near me i will plug it in so that the battery is always charged.

The problem in the bypass stuff is that the battery discharges itself by nature, so I think it will be all the time charging-discharging between, let's say, 99 and 100%.

I'm not sure about that as well...

Looks like 40% charged and kept in a cool place away from the heat of the notebook is the optimum!!

Well all i can really suggest is that you use it on the mains when at home and regularly discharge the battery propery.

Modern batteries are Lithium Ion which hold is charge much better than the older style so this is not such a problem. These batteries have no "memory" and so it doesn't matter if you charge it to 50% then use it and then charge it again when it gets to 30% so i don't think this is really a problem to worry about too much.

It seems to agree with the comments in link that Blencogo posted that keeping the battery in a cool place at 40 percent charged can prolong the battery life..

I think storing the battery at 40% and in a cool place makes sense.

In my experience and using mobmeter to monitor charging, the battery is continually drip-fed a small charge, even at 100%.

Not sure what impact this has on overall battery life, but I leave mine off when at home, just to be safe.
