Blu Ray not quite playing properly

I installed PowerDVD 7.3 with the 2911 patch update but when I tried to play Casino Royale blu ray, it basically plays the featurets and also trailers but when I try to play the movie, it doesn't work - any ideas?

I presume you are using PowerDVD Ultra as this is the only version that will work for you. If i were you then i would simply uninstall it and reinstall it.

If this doesn't work i would try changing some settings and see if that makes any difference.

Blu Ray disks that are in H.264 often run slowly because they're very processor intensive.

Well, yeah It is the ultra version... I manage to download the WinDVD BD version... that actually plays the whole DVD but it is really annoying because it keeps either slowing down slightly for a few seconds every 30 seconds or so and the sound jerks too... I've exited some programs and upgraded from 1GB to 2GB of ram and don't seem to be doing much ?

What speed processor do you have?

The thing is that the film could be transfering 54Mb/s to be decoded and displayed which is a hell of a job. Its obviously not buffering it enough to keep running. Is there any settings in PowerDVD or WinDVD to set the buffer level?

Make sure you have the latest graphic drivers too, as they are used to decode the pictures.

Yeah...

i downloaded a driver off sony's website yesterday so I don't think it is too old... in fact, surely even if it is the original driver, sony wouldn't market the laptop as 'jerking' blu ray player?? Coz no one would buy it... I downloaded a program which does tell me the strain of the processor and it does run to the max when it has blu ray on... It is an AR190G so that is an original Core Duo 1 @ 2GHz... which i didn't think is exactly fast, but neither is it slow... I am so annoyed I'm considering putting my desktop E6400 into it lol...

Any suggestions ?

What other settings anyway can i adjust in WinDVD to speed up the play?

It is an AR190G so that is an original Core Duo 1 @ 2GHz... which i didn't think is exactly fast, but neither is it slow... I am so annoyed I'm considering putting my desktop E6400 into it lol...

Yeah 2GHz Core Duo should be plenty enough welly.

I am afraid your E6400 won't fit as it has 775 pins and the processor in the laptop has 468.

Try some newer graphics drivers than the ones sony supply on Laptopvideo2go. Find a driver with WQHL certification and is a full release rather than a beta and get the modded INF.

This well boost the performance of the card with any luck and sort the problem

I actually tried one of the drivers from that site...

I am not quite sure how to find a driver with "WQHL certification"...

Can you point me into the right direction?

I'd be greatful if you can just send me the exact card to download? As I tried the bottom driver in the main page and it didn't install as it was unsupported...

The card in this a machine is a 7600 GT I think...

It is OK for a laptop though no exactly for gaming lol.. coz I have a 7900 GTX @ SLI on my 40" Full HD bravia! Runs like a dream @ max settings on almost every game lol

I am assuming its a Vista machine?

Here is a driver you can try.

Here is the modded INF.

You need to download if you don't already have it some thing like 7-Zip.

Run 7-Zip and open the file 10117_vista.exe in it and then extract all the files into a new folder on your desktop.

Now replace the INF in the folder with the one you downloaded separately.

Go to device manager and uninstall the graphics card driver that is already installed by right-click -> uninstall on the device.

Make sure you tick the box that says remove software or something like that.

Now reboot.

When it comes back up it'll ask you for a driver. Just cancel it and allow it to install the standard VGA driver.

When this is done go to device manager and right-click on the standard VGA device and click update driver.

Select the second of the two options and then on the next screen again select the second option.

Click on the Have disk button and navigate to the desktop and your folder that you made earlier and open the INF file.

Now it will install. You will be asked to reboot. Stay patient as it may take up to 15 mins to properly shut down.

When it comes back up your driver will be fully installed.

WHQL - Windows Hardware Quality Lab Tested.

You may want to print this out as with the standard VGA driver the resolution will be 640X480!

But it never installed saying that it isn't the right card or something

Here is the XP version and here is the INF file.

Follow the instructions again as they should be the same. (You could try running the setup exe instead of the device manager bit when you get to that point)

lol... that was the one i already downloaded! 😞 Not working... but then it could well be the inf thingy... What configuration should I write? the only thing I selected was 101.19 driver version... not sure what the rest should be... I also had a look in notepad regarding the driver details but i noticed that 7600 go GT isn't listed I wonder why sony uses crap graphics card like these in thier supposingly desktop replacement systems

That is why you extract the EXE to a folder and then replace the inf file with the one you download. Then inside the folder (that it was extracted to) run the exe.

thats weird... i did that, installed fine but after i restarted, i couldn't boot in as the graphics was obviously not right and needed to revert to previous good settings... then now when i open some programs that needs dos, it says that command promt have been disabled by admin when I am admin lol... any ideas??

The main problem is that the graphics card isn't doing the hardware decoding for H264 encoded movies like Casino Royale.

Hi,

For your information, Casino Royale plays smoothly with the following configuration :
- Core 2 Duo at 2Ghz
- 2 GB of RAM
- Geforce Go 7600GT with Nvidia drivers 158.24 (for Vista)
- Nothing nothing nothing running in the background

With this configuration, the CPU is used always between 80 and 100% but the movie plays smoothly. But if you do something else, even something very simple like adjusting the volume, the movie hangs on...

I am afraid that the manufacturers lie about the power required to play blu-ray movies. It is true that you can play VC-1 or MPEG-2 encoded movies on most of the recent machines, but H264 encoded movies require a really very powerful machine : a very very powerful processor and/or one of the most recent graphic cards with H264 acceleration (which is not the case of the 7600 GT).

No, not necessarily, it's mainly due to bad drivers as the computer is able to do it with the right hardware control.
