VAIO will not restart

Hi all,

I have a SZ5MN/B Vaio laptop with Vista business preinstalled. My problem is that every time I try restarting the pc through the start menu, the screen shows "Windows is shutting down" and then nothing changes. The screen is just frozen with that message on the screen.

The only way to power off the laptop is to hold down the power button for a few seconds. The next time I try starting the pc the screen appears saying "WIndows did not shut down properly". This happens every time I try restarting the laptop. When I select shut down from the menu, it shuts down normally and then starts normally so the problem only happens when I restart.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks BZ

Hi BZ and welcome to Club Vaio.

The usual two culprits are: -

Norton Internet Security - try closing this manually before trying a Restart.

nVidia Graphics Drivers - What version of the Forceware driver are you using?

Odd that it's just on restart - I can't find a Microsoft Hotfix - you may have to wait for Vista SP1.

Welcome to ClubVAIO

Sounds like a windows update trying to install. You should leave it on the screen for about an hour and see if it restarts as some take a very long time.

If that isn't the case then you may have some processes that are closing properly

Thanks guys,

The problem has been sorted now.

I installed a patch which prevented club vaio from requesting permission everytime the laptop started, as that was another problem that I had. Once this patch was installed it got rid of both the permission and restart problems.
