flickering lcd screen,

Hi there

I was using my laptop today when i suddenly got really bad screen flicker, change in color and just basically a mess. I have a vgn-cizb model, the screen is a 13.3" wxga x black lcd one. I hooked up the laptop to an external monitor and it displayed fine so i am assuming the issue is the lcd screen itself or a connector within the laptop? Does anyone know what could be causing the problem and also is it something that can be repaired? Would i need to go via sony and would it be expensive?
Can i use the laptop with an external monitor until it gets fixed or would that cause any futher issues?

A few questions i know but i do hope someone can help me.
Many thanks.
