topic Problem running Linux distros on ageing laptop in PCs & Accessories

I have an ageing PCG-FX109K laptop on which I have been trying to run a couple of Linux distros (Ubuntu and Fedora) from the CDs but all I get is a blank screen with a small horizontal cursor flashing not far from the top left corner of the screen. The machine seems to be loading (some of ) the software from the CD as the drive is working quite hard. I have changed the BIOS to boot from CD. I have increased the RAM to 514MB and the HD to 80 GB. The processor is a Pentium III 850MHz. Can anyone tell me (or point me to another information source)what I need to do to get one or other of these to run on this laptop and why they don't run as easily as they do on my desktop?
Cheers
Bill
