OK, I woke up this morning, turned on my Vaio FR415B and it wouldn't boot.

I got the

DISC ERROR. PLEASE PRESS CTRL-ALT-DEL TO REBOOT.

it did this a few times and I decided to reach for the recovery disc. I ran through the on screen instructions and when it got to the section where it was about to wipe the hard disk, it threw up and error and told me it could not complete the operation.

the laptop rebooted and then the only thing that happened was an error appears on a black screen saying

OPERATING SYSTEM ERROR

help!!!!

ok, i have spoken to a data recovery service who know their stuff and they tell me that i have a problem with the hard drive.

the drive is an Hitachi travelstar 4200rpm and the boot sector is fukced. with data recovery starting at £500 i think i will just get a new hd.

after reading many reviews i have opted for the new Hitachi Travelstar 7200rpm 60gb (nice...) this should speed things up immeasurably and give me some more space.

just one question though...

this is a 60gb drive... my old one was a 40gb... will it recognise in the bios on my FR415b?

If the Bootsector ****ed, you must reformat the harddisc. You need for this a bootable partition tool, which can format all sectors on the harddisc.

Mmmh, I found this freeware on the WWW. (click me )

But I haven't tried it. The important thing is that the Boot sector becomes written new. That you can start the recovery DVD.

Putting a 60GB drive won't be a problem, you just need to use the advanced recovery option.
