My SP heats up too. I have almost all the google apps disabled including chrome. But other browsers heat up the phone as well. Even light games heat it up. It never came down to auto shut down or charge-stop but it is really annoying. Because of the heat my hands starts to sweat so using gestures becomes very hard.

I also found out that after 4.3 my network signal is weaker. It was not like that in 4.1 so maybe it is related to phone radio. Also Android eats up too much battery.

Yeah actually I realised that disabling the apps does not help much I only did it to save some ram (that was before I learnt how ram worked in android) now I'm too lazy to enable them all again. Just wanted to mention it because poster above me asked it.

Mine never shut down either and it heated up on 4.1 as well but now it seems quicker and too much more when using 3g data and I kinda felt after some time temparature went down in 4.1 now it seems like it heats up more and more. It's now summer here maybe the weather affects it as well.

As for the heating problem, here's how I minimalize it...
1. Set the screen brightness as low as possible
2. Use GSM only network
3. Install push-based app (like Facebook, WhatsApp, BBM, Twitter, etc) as few as possible
4. Don't install background-running app
5. Turn on STAMINA mode if needed to cut push-based apps connection
6. Don't use Live Wallpaper
7. Underclock to 1026 MHz (root only)
