Xperia Z will not charge when device is OFF

Hi guys,

I got this after updating the firmware of the device. The device would not charge no matter what I do (plug it from the included wall adaptor or USB sockets from the computer). It will charge normally if the device is on but if I turn it off it won't charge at all! No light, no nothing

Please help.

I updated using PCC and tried to repair the update using Sony update service. I have tried factory resetting my phone. This feature worked because I charged it fully before I opened my phone for the first time.

This corresponds to my other thread - with the Z not charging unless the USB drivers are up and running fine.

Also if the phone is off due to having run completely flat it will take quite a while before you see an obvious response to charging, particularly when charging via PC.

What are your thoughts about this forum? Let us know by doing this short survey.

Thanks Sam and per for your response. I have looked at the thread and will try your solution.

Oh and Sam what do you mean it will take quite a while before I see an obvious response? I have tried just leaving it plugged in for 40 min after turning it off completely and when i turned it on there was no change in battery charge..

I might just let it run down and see if it will somehow charge when off.

Ok I have tried draining it and leaving the cable plugged in (~ 8 hours) and it did not charge at all. And it charges normally using USB and WALL but only if the device is ON. Turn it off and PUFF it's like it's in a deep sleep state even the time is frozen and shows the time when I turned it OFF

I did some digging around and apart from per's thread there is also another one who showed problems with charging.

I have the same issue. So the only work around for this is make sure you put it to charge before the battary drains fully. Otherwise it takes many hours untill it decides to start charging. I kept it plugged to the AC plug point overnight didnt charge at all but in the morning after few hrs it switched on but the battery hasn't charged at all it was charging from 1%.

Really wwired and annoying.

Hope ther will be a solution for this soon.

And also it doesnt charge with any USB cable for me. You have to use the sony one.

I have the same problem with you but i can't use PPC and US to fix the problem as my phone can not boot in flash mode.

Is it can only be sent to warranty?

I believe if you leave it on the charger for long enough it will eventually charge

this is a bug that needs attention and is known

Hopefully they sort it out soon. I've learned to live with it but I wanted to charge my battery when it's off to be as gentle on the battery as I can. (not replaceable so yeah) Now i just put it on airplane mode and turn off the screen to have as little load as possible.

I have this problem too. It happened the other day since my battery totally ran out. It won't even charge using the official Sony dock (dk26)

Does this need a repair or will it be corrected in a future update?

Anyone at Sony have any answers?

Try with a USB port on a pc instead. Leave it on for a few hours...

Thanks for your response. I've tried charging for 24 hours with the USB charger and also the Sony dock, I have not tried directly from my PC USB though.

I can't understand why the phone charges fine on but not when off.

Sony support - Do I need a replacement handset or will ths be fixed? It renders my dock fairly useless as I bought it to charge the phone overnight when off.

Phoned Xperia care who suggested I do a repair via PC companion. I spent around 3 hours tonight backing up, updating and restoring and guess what?

NO DIFFERENCE!

Getting slightly annoyed now.

first of all it's not a complete disaster as long as you don't let the phone completely discharge.

Other people have reported this issue and I suspect there are many more, it could be a setting somewhere or an app interfereing with normal function - don't know, I have never tried to charge my phone switched off or even looked ito this issue - I don't know if it affects me or not

I suspect as this phone is fitted with a fast charging function that it does some handshaking when plugged into a charger to see if it is fast charge capable - it seems that it can't do this possibly if it's turned off or the battery is completely flat

This issue has been flagged with Sony and I'd expect a resolution with a future update

Enjoy your phone and don't let the battery completely discharge for now

I assume you tried the charging straight away after you performed the update repair before doing any restore or app installation

Yes, I can still charge the phone so I know it's not a complete disaster. I did try to charge straight away before doing any backup restore. I love my Z and will stick with it until Sony find a resolution (or not) I notice there are quite a few users with the same issue now. It's just a shame it's another bug along with the known led problem and I'm coming off the back of an Xperia S with the yellow tint issue so I hope you understand my frustration.

Let's hope Sony find a fix soon.

camera (compression - low light shots - sensitivity to red in low light)

wifi (fixed in router if you change encryption to AES)

charging issues

stamina led

screen calibration

overall I'm happy with the phone - I've travelled across the world with it and it did the job - reverse journey tomorrow and expecting same

I've spoken to both Carphone Warehouse and Sony Xperia support today. Neither were aware of this issue with the phone and both recommended it being sent for repair (14 days or so)

Is there someone at Sony who can confirm this is a more common issue and a fix will be implemented in a future update? I'd rather not send the phone off, especially if I know a fix is coming, but equally I'd like some assurance that its being looked at. I know its a 'minor' issue but it was working correctly beforehand so something must be wrong.

I got the same issue (Phone not charging while powering off).

I didn't notice this issue untill I did the last firmware update via PC update service tool, so I think that update has something to do with this issue.

And my friend who hasn't done the update didn't have this issue. His phone will show a battery charging icon while power-off charging.

Hello I have recently bought a Sony Xperia Z and it completely lost its battery charge and wont switch on I have used several chargers and tried Pc method still no luck I see the red kight go on then it gis off I have left my phone on charge longer than 24 hours still no life can anyone help
